A WHOLE NEW WORLD:
Writing with the young child in mind
The natural world of mini creatures can be a rich source for extraordinary and intriguing stories, often when one least expects it, even in one’s own backyard.
When Jennifer observed perfect semi-circle cuts in her rosebush leaves and other shrubs, it piqued her interest...this was not a creature eating leaves.
Jennifer's curiosity about botanicals, pollinators, host plants, and the symbiotic relationship between insect and plant are part of her ongoing research.
She learned it was the work of a leafcutter bee, a bee many people have never heard of; neither had she. She discovered most books are about honey bees, and bumble bees that live in hives. What about the thousands of native bees that are solitary bees? It was time to share her personal discovery about the lesser-known, leafcutter bee.
ABOUT LADY LEAFCUTTER BEE
“I am fascinated with the leafcutter bee. She is the cutest bee, plus she is the only bee in the world that cuts leaves to build her nest. She is a solitary bee, i.e., she does all the work herself. I gave her the title of Lady Leafcutter Bee."
“This remarkable story was well on its way to completion, but I knew in my heart there was another component to add. I was compelled to bring Lady Leafcutter Bee to life. My colored pencils, brushes, watercolors, gouache, and collage soon began filling pages portraying my passion for the natural world."
Lady Leafcutter Bee is now a character in her own right, and Jennifer is determined to share her story with children, families, teachers, and librarians, bringing prominence to leafcutter bees and their equally important role in pollination.
